Daybreak Pride Event to Celebrate Love With Music, Dance, Food and Games
By Justin Adams
Daybreak residents will have a chance to celebrate Pride Month right here in our community. The Daybreak for Diversity and Inclusion Club is hosting a Pride event On Sunday, June 9 at Highland Park from 1 - 4:30 p.m.
“Our club has held Pride ice cream socials for the last two years, which were well received, so we decided to expand it further this year,” said Meliss Ross, who has been a member and volunteer of the Diversity and Inclusion Club since it started a few years ago.
This year’s event will include music by the band ‘Smarter than Katie,’ which plays a “diverse range of music, including original songs and reimagined covers spanning three decades,” according to Ross. There will also be an acrobatic display put on by Cheer Salt Lake and a performance by Lavender Menaces, a performance artist collective dedicated to empowering marginalized and silenced communities.
There will also be info booths, food trucks, and games. Troy Williams, the Executive Director of Equality Utah will also be speaking at the event.
The event is free, but the Diversity and Inclusion Club is asking for a donation from attendees who can afford it, in order to help fund future events. Residents can also support the Club by ordering a Pride flag kit that can be pre-ordered here and picked up at the event.
So why are events like this so important?
“Every person should be included and loved for the person that they are. Pride is a way to celebrate what we have in common as well as what makes us uniquely special,” Ross said. “From a personal standpoint, I have been involved in supporting the community since I was in elementary school, growing up with a brother that I adore who also happens to be gay- at a time when it wasn’t socially acceptable. Pride is even more important to me now as a parent. It makes me feel so good to hear my ten-year-old son speak with kindness when talking about ALL people, and I believe raising the next generation to be kind, loving, and inclusive can make all the difference.”
